  • FamilyPro are Helping Families & Workplaces Find Balance in Real Life

Ever felt like juggling childcare, housework, and caring for elders is a never-ending puzzle? Are you a new expat navigating the complex Swiss childcare system or a busy parent trying to do it all? If life sometimes feels overwhelming, this local consultancy is here to help you put the pieces together. New to the Living In Nyon Directory, FamilyPro  is founded on one core belief: a balanced life isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. FamilyPro is putting this into action by hosting a free webinar exclusively for the Living In Nyon community (details to follow). If you're overwhelmed or stuck trying to navigate local childcare options especially after facing long waitlists or placement setbacks, this 45-minute session is a relaxed space to bring your questions and hear honest, practical answers and advice from local experts. Read on for more about the webinar below . What They Do FamilyPro isn’t just a nanny agency (although they’re great at that too). Think of them as a one-stop solution for busy lives supporting both private families and companies who want to help their employees feel more supported at home. They don’t just help you find the right person, they also help you do it the right way. Beyond that, they will guide you through Swiss legal and administrative details; contracts, insurance, permits so you can be sure to avoid any unwanted surprises or stresses further down the road. Here’s what they offer: Finding childcare solutions  – from navigating local crèches and waiting lists to recruiting reliable, professional nannies. Hiring housekeepers and domestic staff  – including cleaning help, meal prep, and even live-in support for families who travel. Supporting elder care  – helping families find the right kind of assistance for aging parents. Managing the admin  – contracts, insurance, payslips, withholding tax, permits… all taken care of. Everyday life help  – wellness bookings, dry cleaning pickup, pet care, travel bookings...the list goes on. Why It Matters If you’ve just moved to Switzerland or have lived here for years, you know that life admin is real, and in this country of rules, forms, and permits, it never really stops, it just evolves. The daycare spot doesn’t come through? Your work hours change? Maybe your child’s needs change, or you’re trying to figure out after-school activities that actually fit your schedule. Or you’re dealing with paperwork, deadlines, and the constant balancing act of family, work, and everything in between. FamilyPro can step in and help you make smart, informed choices, not guesswork. They know the legal requirements, the local systems, and the realities of Swiss life, so you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Getting the right support at home makes work-life balance possible. And even if things don’t fall into place straight away, there are  options, and there is  help. You don’t have to do it all. Trusted, Personal, and Professional Born out of experience, founders Patricia Matiz (left)  and Brigitte Mermoud (right)  met while working in the work-life balance field and knew they wanted to build something that made a difference. Patricia, a working mum who knows the stress of waitlists and last-minute babysitter emergencies all too well launched FamilyPro in 2023. Brigitte, with her own vast experience supporting families, including her own. Together, they’ve created something both deeply practical and truly warm. • Finding Your Place in Nyon This Autumn

Nyon in September is an interesting time. The kids are back at school, the buzz of summer is fading fast, and we begin the shift into autumn mode. The last music festivals wrap up just as wine festivals begin, evenings grow cooler, and the vineyards start to glow gold and there’s a quieter kind of energy in the air. For newcomers, arriving in this season can feel lovely, though that fresh start often comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Adjusting to a new place isn’t always smooth. Some people settle quickly, finding their rhythm in no time, while for others it takes a little longer. Just when you feel like you’ve started to build a circle, friends move away, routines change, and you’re back to square one. It can feel unsettling, but it’s also part of living in a town that’s constantly moving and evolving. The good news is, it gets easier. Here are some ways to go from feeling like an outsider to feeling at home in Nyon. A Quick Snapshot of Nyon Nyon is home to about 23,500 residents  (as of June 2024), made up of long-time locals, Swiss newcomers, and many international arrivals. Almost 40% of the town are foreign nationals, which means there’s a rich mix of cultures, languages, and stories. LIN (Living in Nyon) is an association for people in Nyon and surrounding areas who want to connect, share, and support one another. Through writing, events, Sponsors and our Member Directory, we aim to highlight local businesses, bring people together, and make things for any newcomers and long term residents just that bit easier. Find Your People Building connections from scratch has its challenges, especially when summer slows down. But there’s no shortage of opportunities. Try joining a class; French, yoga, Pilates, dance, or even wine tasting. Watch for local happenings like walking tours, pop-ups, seasonal exhibits at the Musée romain, Château de Nyon, or Musée du Léman. Don’t wait for someone else to say hello. An invite for coffee, a walk by the lake, or even a simple greeting can open doors. I’ve made some of my closest friends that way. Over time, you’ll find your people, and you’ll be the person helping the next Newcomer. 2. Get Out & Explore Local Life Nothing makes a place feel more like home than getting out and walking its streets. Take a day trip to Lausanne or Geneva, discover a favourite spot by the lake, or join in the upcoming Wine Festival (3-4 October). Nyon has over 230 associations and foundations , covering everything from sport, arts and culture, to social causes and politics including us here at Living in Nyon . Joining a group isn’t just about hobbies; it’s a way to share interests, find familiar faces, and build community. Go once, you might go back, and before you know it, you’ve got regular faces around you. It’s also the small moments, the bread from the bakery, the views from the castle, the cool sky at in the early evenings that will make Nyon feel like yours. The more you wander, the more those small routines turn into something meaningful. Expect the Ups and Downs Some days you’ll feel like you’ve cracked it; scheduling appointments, speaking bits of French, navigating local shops.  Other days, you’ll feel like packing your bags and moving somewhere easier (where Sunday shopping is actually a thing!). A big part of settling in is wrestling with paperwork; permits, insurance, health forms, often in a language you’re less confident in. It’s not always fun. But every form you manage, every question you understand, builds something: confidence and that sense of belonging so acknowledge the hard days and celebrate these small wins. Learn Some French (Even Just a Little!) Switzerland is wonderfully multilingual , and in Nyon you’ll catch snippets of Spanish, Portuguese, English, German and more in a single day.  You can get by without French, but even simple phrases go a long way. Learning how to confidently order a more complicated coffee drink (decaf oat milk latte) or order some antihistamines from the pharmacy without switching to English? That’s a small but satisfying win. Perfect grammar isn’t the goal, it’s simply showing you’re willing to try. If full-on classes sound too daunting, try a casual conversation group instead. Give It Time Becoming local doesn’t happen overnight. It’s about showing up. For that lakeside walk, language exchange, or just stopping to chat with your neighbours. Before you know it, you’ll have your favourite cafés, your go-to weekend hikes, and the realisation that, somehow, Nyon has become home. Also: Our LIN Member Directory We’re growing our  LIN Member Directory . A space where local businesses, services, and community makers can be found. If you run something (teaching, coaching, crafts, cafés, you name it), or if you want to look up who and what is around, it’s there for you. Interested in being included? Just get in touch. Welcome to life in Nyon! Now, go grab that apéro, you’ve earned it. What helped you  settle in here? Drop your tips, insights or stories in the comments below. Your experience could be helpful to someone else just starting out.

  • Leadership of the Future: Insights from LIN’s First Leadership Event

Living in Nyon (LIN) was proud to host its first Leadership of the Future  event last week. An evening that brought together leaders, professionals, and curious minds in the region to explore how leadership is evolving in today’s changing world. With a full house and an atmosphere charged with energy, the event combined expertise, perspectives, and dialogue in a way that made it both engaging and memorable. Our speakers We were honoured to welcome an exceptional panel: Gaelle Devins , Member of the Executive Board, Breitling Barbara Lax , CEO & Founder, Little Greenhouse Guido Gianasso , Professor of Leadership, HEC Paris Andrea Gerosa , Founder, ThinkYoung The discussion was moderated by Mike from Numeriq , one of LIN’s valued sponsors. Each of them shared valuable insights drawn from their fields of experience, sparking reflection and discussion among all those present. We were also delighted to welcome Alex Clarke from Albatross Group , our latest Directory Member, who joined us for the evening. A special thank you as well to a.one Business Park in Rolle for hosting us in such a welcoming space. Key themes and takeaways Shifting expectations of leadership Younger generations are redefining the way leadership is understood. Research shows they are demonstrating higher individualism , placing greater value on personal wellbeing and balance, rather than being employed “at all costs.” At the same time, they show lower power distance , a readiness to challenge authority when decisions do not align with logic or fairness. Interestingly, these patterns are emerging even in cultures traditionally associated with hierarchy, signalling a global shift in attitudes towards leadership and collaboration. Connection and trust as constants Despite cultural differences, one theme emerged as universal: people want to feel connected and trusted in their workplace. For leaders, this means prioritising openness, dialogue, and relationship-building to unlock purpose and genuine engagement within their teams. More than a panel discussion What made the evening so impactful was the spirit of exchange. Rather than a one-way panel, the event evolved into a dynamic conversation where participants shared ideas, asked questions, and offered new perspectives. It reflected the very essence of community; a space where knowledge flows freely, connections are built, and new ways of thinking take shape. The conversations didn’t stop there: the apéro that followed was abuzz with discussion , as guests connected over plenty of food and drinks, continuing the dialogue sparked during the panel. Looking ahead We are grateful to our speakers, attendees, and community members who helped make this first Leadership of the Future  event such a success. 📅 Save the date:  Our next event will take place on 2nd September 2026. We look forward to welcoming you again for another evening of dialogue, learning, and connection.

  • Big Voices, Young Stars. GAOS Youth Take on Les Misérables in Nyon

What happens when 30 talented young performers come together to stage one of the world’s most iconic musicals? You get the kind of production that stirs the soul and brings a whole community to its feet. This summer, GAOS (Geneva Amateur Operatic Society) is bringing Les Misérables: School Edition  to Nyon and it’s a show you won’t want to miss. Not just because of its unforgettable music and emotional depth, but because of the passion powering it behind the scenes. At the helm is director Sarah Irwin , who first stepped onto a GAOS stage at the age of five. Since then, she’s done it all; performing, building sets, calling cues, and even (accidentally) painting herself while working on props. These days, she juggles her love of theatre with roles as a PE teacher, netball coach, and after-school musical theatre teacher at Collège du Léman. This is her second time directing for the GAOS Youth Company last year it was High School Musical . This year, she’s taking it up a gear. A Musical with Muscle Why Les Misérables ? “It's my all-time favourite show,” says Sarah. “The music, the story, the emotion - it’s powerful. So when GAOS asked me to direct the school edition, I was honoured.” Due to the ongoing international tour, rights to the full version are restricted. But the youth edition, exclusively available to under-18 performers, gave GAOS the perfect opportunity to challenge their cast with something bold, dramatic, and deeply human. “The show’s themes - hope, resilience, and injustice, are timeless. We all face tough moments, and Les Mis  reminds us that holding onto hope and looking out for each other can really make a difference.” Sarah Irwin Director. Sarah also played Wishee Washee in the GAOS production of Aladdin. A Global Story With Local Heart First staged in Paris in 1980, Les Misérables  has become one of the world’s most beloved musicals. Translated into 22 languages, seen by over 130 million people, and winner of more than 100 international awards. Set in 19th-century France and based on Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, it follows the journey of Jean Valjean, a man seeking redemption in a world stacked against him. Its score is legendary, featuring unforgettable songs like: I Dreamed a Dream On My Own Bring Him Home One Day More Master of the House With Boublil and Schönberg (both French creators) at the helm and an original Paris production directed by Robert Hossein, Les Misérables  is a musical that lives and breathes the human spirit. Now, this powerful story is finding new life in Nyon through the voices of its youngest performers. Young Cast, Big Feelings How do teens connect with such epic storytelling? Sarah asked her cast directly Teenagers still have that youthful wonder. We see problems and want to change things, that makes us connect deeply with the story. Just look at youth-led movements around the world. - Luke  (Javert) As teens, we definitely feel things intensely, adds. I’ve seen friends act just as dramatically in love as Éponine! I just draw on that energy from real life. - Morwenna  (Éponine) Their answers reflect what Sarah sees every week in rehearsal: real emotional engagement, commitment, and a hunger to perform from the heart. Behind the Curtain. Flags, Paint, and Countryside Runs Rehearsals have been anything but dull. In fact, laughter has been just as vital as lines. One of the actors, Sam, keeps waving random objects; disco balls, ladles, umbrellas, etc instead of a flag during scenes. It's become a game now as to how long it will take people to notice! There are post-rehearsal countryside runs where scenes are re-enacted mid-jog, moments of spontaneous games, and yes some paint-related mishaps. It’s in these moments, with the joy, the silliness, the teamwork, that theatre comes alive. Why It Matters for Nyon Sarah believes this production is a gift to the local community. It’s powerful. It’s moving. And it’s accessible. “This version is a little shorter (about 2h30 including intermission) and more affordable than a professional production, so it’s perfect for families". And who knows, someone in the audience might get inspired to try theatre themselves. On stage or backstage, this could be their entry point. It takes hundreds of hours and a huge team to bring a show like this to life. By coming to see it, you’re not just watching you’re supporting local talent. Some of these young performers may go on to incredible things. This is your chance to say, 'I saw them before they made it big'. Whether it’s your first time seeing Les Mis , or your tenth, you’re guaranteed to leave humming the songs and feeling good inside. And in a region like Nyon, where creativity and community thrive, this feel-good ripple effect matters. • Nyon’s Floral Mosaic Celebrates UEFA Women’s Euro 2025

67th floral mosaic - Women's Euro 2025 Photo: Michel Perret A Colourful Tribute to Women’s Football If you’ve walked through Nyon’s Parc du Bourg-de-Rive lately, you’ve likely spotted the stunning floral mosaic at the heart of the park, a much-loved summer tradition now in its 67th year . Each year, the Ville de Nyon’s Environment Department creates a large-scale mosaic made from thousands of plants grown in local greenhouses. The theme? Always something that reflects our times. In 2025, it’s all about football and making space for everyone on the pitch. Celebrating the Women's Euro 2025 This year’s mosaic pays tribute to the UEFA Women’s Euro, hosted in Switzerland from 2 to 27 July. The design is part of Nyon’s larger initiative, “2025, toutes au foot!”, which supports the visibility, participation, and long-term development of women’s football in the region. Six varieties of colourful plants and textured materials make up this year's striking arrangement designed not just to impress, but to start conversations. At its core, the mosaic is a visual statement of inclusion, play, and possibility. Catch the tournament live from the lakeside Fan Zone Nyon invites residents and visitors alike to experience the full energy of the tournament at its dedicated Fan Zone, located under the Rive tent by the lake. All matches will be broadcast live on a giant screen , with a bar and casual setting for fans of all ages to gather, cheer, and connect. From walking football to freestyle sessions, football on sand, and even multi-generational games. Later this autumn, a special careers day will also spotlight the many professional opportunities around football, on the field and behind the scenes, to challenge stereotypes and open new paths. More than a tournament, it’s a movement With deep ties to UEFA and a strong community spirit, Nyon is seizing this moment to create lasting change for women in sport. The goal isn’t just to celebrate the Euro, it’s to build momentum that continues well beyond it. For match schedules, activities, and more information: nyon.ch/toutesaufoot

A Quick Look at the History The 1st August is Swiss National Day, an official National Holiday since 1994. It celebrates the day in 1291 that the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Letter of Confederation, pledging to help each other in the case of an attack. There are many ways of celebrating this day throughout the country within the cantons and each one has their own unique ways; brunch at your local farm, traditional musical performances, parades, bonfires, fireworks, children carrying lanterns with the Swiss flag and friends and families getting together. Happy Swiss National Day From Living In Nyon!

  • MenoPower Day from Healthfirst: A Powerful Shift in the Menopause Conversation

Back in May, I had the privilege of attending HealthFirst’s MenoPower Day . An inaugral menopause awareness event dedicated to breaking the silence around menopause and giving women the tools, knowledge, and confidence they deserve. Held in Geneva, the day brought together experts, speakers, and women from all walks of life to learn, share, and connect. It was honest, open and quite empowering. Menopause is so often a whispered topic, but here it was centre stage. Not something to hide or downplay, but something to understand, prepare for, and embrace with support. What HealthFirst Brings to the Table Founded in 2012, Healthfirst Initially aimed to serve the English-speaking community around Lake Geneva with top-quality first aid training and health education. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Wright and Dr. Mecky McNeil, it delivers evidence-based health promotion across Switzerland and beyond. They offer a broad spectrum of services. From first aid and seminars for schools and companies, to mental health coaching and health screening assessments. Notably, Dr. Mecky, as Mental Health and Well-being Director, also brings her expertise being a certified health and performance coach to support those in menopause with holistic, lasting support. Left to Right: Dr Els van der Helm, Dr Mecky McNeil & Dr Michelle Wright Highlights from MenoPower Day The closing messages from Dr. Michelle Wright and Dr. Mecky McNeil summed up the spirit of the day beautifully: The science of menopause is clear: knowledge is power, and there is help available. Movement, rest, and nutrition are not luxuries. They are foundations of health. You’re not alone: what you're experiencing is real and valid. You deserve to be heard. At work, at home, and in the doctor’s office. We’re changing the conversation and replacing silence and stigma with shared understanding, community, and confidence. Liza Engel Meanwhile, Liza Engel’s  keynote also stood out: “ Many highly capable, ambitious women start questioning themselves thinking they’re losing their edge when, in reality, their bodies are just going through a natural transition. … That’s why I’m speaking at MenoPower. To share what I’ve learned and help women take back control instead of feeling like they’re losing their power. ” What Liza shared captured the personal impact of menopause while highlighting the importance of greater awareness and compassion. A Growing Movement The MenoPower Day wasn’t just a one-off event. HealthFirst is committed to continuing this work, with the next MenoPower event hopefully planned for Zurich on Saturday, 25 April 2026 . They are also exploring the idea of creating a dedicated session for men; helping partners, colleagues, and family members better understand and support the women in their lives going through menopause. HealthFirst’s intentional programming; from sleep tips to mindful movement, is exactly the type of empowerment I believe in. As a menopause coach through The Hormone Harmony Network, attending MenoPower Day was more than inspiring, it reaffirmed that our shared voices and stories are powerful.
