Nature Festival in Morges on Friday, Sat and Sun for both Adults and Children

Now into its 12th year, the Salamandre (Salamander) Festival is a three day festival and that attracts thousands of nature lovers and visitors of all ages from French speaking Switzerland.
The festival’s aim is to increase public awareness about the fantastic diversity and fragility of the natural world.  Over the three days, there will be a diverse programme of events: exhibitions, films, workshops for children and storytelling.

The festival takes place in the Beausobre building in Morges (accessible by both car and public transport) and will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 -19:00 and Sunday from 10:0 -18:00 . More info here

This year’s theme is  “Forests” and aims to show only to show the beauty and diversity of forests but to underline the difficult balance between man and nature.

Other key features are of this year’s programme are discovery labs  & workshops for children, interactive games and crafts galore to learn more about the secret life of the forest  There will be an art gallery with almost thirty Swiss and French artists displaying their work: Watercolours, sketches, oil paintings, sculpture and photography.Films on the big screen.

Local organisations from museums to local charities and national parks will be at this festival along with artisans and local produce.

 

 

 

Busy weekend in Nyon and Morges – Autumn events, from car shows to wine fairs to Expat Expo

There is a lot on the agenda this weekend in both the Nyon and Morges areas, with a bit of careful planning you could attend all events should you wish.  Read on and take your pick!

Wine Festival in Nyon

Focussing on the town of Nyon itself. The annual Fête de la Vigne (wine festival) kicks off on Friday night 3rd October at 17:00 with wine and live music outside the Place du Château. At 18:00, the band “Red Night) (A Swiss tribute band to Californian group Green Day) are on the line up, followed by “Bruce Copeland” at 21:00.

On Saturday 4th the wine festival begins in earnest and continues all day with events from 10:00 in the morning to 22:30 at night.  The official ceremony is scheduled for 14:30, and at 15:00 the actual grapes will be picked from the vines near the castle in the gardens above the La Duche car park and then they will be pressed in the old wine press.  Members of the public can take part in the grape picking! For the full programme see here.  See video below of last year’s event on Nyon TV.

Autumn Fair in Nyon – Oktoberfest

The annual Autumn Fair in Nyon has been renamed Oktoberfest this year, along with the lovely colourful Autumn stands along the streets of Nyon, there presumably will be beer on sale too! The fair continues all day, from 07:00: to 20:00.

UEFA open day in Nyon 

A reminder that it’s Open Day at UEFA on Saturday the 4th October from 09:00-16:00. This open day is a chance to see inside the building, to take part in competitions, to see behind the scenes and look at   exhibitions all about the beautiful game.  Details here

Ski Club Troc in Bassins

It’s the “troc” (second hand sale) of ski gear in the Grande Salle in Bassins on Saturday the 4th Ocotber. A great opportunity to get equipped for the coming winter season and to find out about La Gamelle (the ski club) itself.  Got ski gear to sell?  Then you can deposit it between 10:00 and 11:30. The actual sale begins at 13:30 until 15:30 and unsold goods must be collected 16:00 and 16:30.

British Classic Car show in Morges  

It’s the annual Classic Car show in Morges on Saturday 4th October. This takes place along Morges lake side from 10:00 to 17:00.

This car show is  gathering of over 1500 British classic cars and motorbikes of all makes.  Entry is free for both participants and the public.  See here for full details

Big Expat fair – Sunday 5th October in Geneva 

This Sunday it’s Expat Expo in Geneva from 11:00 to 17:00 at La Praille shopping centre. Meet 100s of exhibitors from all over Switzerland. These expat fairs are very useful if you have recently moved to Switzerland and want to know about the services that are on offer for expats. Banks, insurance companies and small English speaking businesses will be all there under one roof, along with experts on hand to answer questions about living in this country.

L’Elastique Citrique celebrates its 20th anniversary, Church fair this weekend and more


Started in 1994 by François and nini Pythoud, Nyon’s circus school has grown to become an important part of the cultural life in Nyon and the region. Over 300 children take circus classes there every week, and out of those half a dozen have continued to become professional circus artists. To celebrate their 20th, they have decided to re-imagine their first show ever with these professional artists and their partners. The show Rouge, will be played seven times at the théâtre de Marens in Nyon. The première is on Thursday the 25th and the show is on until Thursday 2nd of October, building up to the weekend of the 3rd-5th of October, which will be a weekend of celebration at the Caserne, next to the Perdtemps square.

Four different shows will be played by the different troups of the artists who started of at l’Elastique Citrique, as well as a disco party on Saturday the 5th with Time Machine, an 70’s-80’s disco and funk cover band. There will also be an open stage showcasing acts from some of the younger members of the school, and a big brunch on Sunday morning, followed by a ballon release to celebrate in style. Food and drinks will be catered by the team from “La Roulotte”.
L’Elastique citrique also created an act which was performed at the beginning of the Knie show which was in Nyon last week.

Vaud athletics championship
The cantonal athletics championships take place on Saturday the 27th at Colovray stadium. Athletes will compete from 8:00 to 18:00, and the entrance is free

L’alpage, an artist’s studio cum art school is holding it’s annual exhibition. Paintings made during lessons will be exhibited and there will be music and rock showcases. Sunday the 28th, from 14:00 to 18:30, at 4, ch. de Bonmont. More info about l’Alpage here

New Paléo poster out!
Paléo has brought out next year’s poster. Created by an agency from Geneva, it’s actually three different posters, which link up as a big one, showcasing some weird creatures inspired by the wacky Paléo crowd. The line-up won’t be released until early April 2015, but week-long tickets will be on sale in December, and are a perfect Christmas gift.

“Et maintenant?” Big debate tomorrow in Nyon, Autumn Fair in Founex

What will Nyon look like in 2030, when it comes to housing, living together and work opportunities? If these questions interest you, the City council in partnership with the economic magasine Bilan and Uni Global Union are hosting a big debate tomorrow morning Friday 19th of September, from 8:30 to  12:15 at UNI Global Union headquarters. Bringing together the major players in the area, from politicians to demographics specialists, this morning of debate will tackle issues such as the aging of the population, work opportunities, what it means to live in Nyon and more. Among the people taing part in the debate will be president of the Grand-Conseil Pierre-Yves Maillard and Tibère Adler, head of Avenir Suisse for Romandie.

La Côte Church Autumn Fair in Founex

La Côte Church will be hosting its Autumn fair on Saturday the 27th of September. There will be a number of stalls including a book stall, a chutney and pickle stall and more. Live music, dancing and food for the adults, while the kids can have fun in the children’s corner. The fair is on from 10:00 to 17:00 in Founex

New location for Nyon post office – Nyon taxes , UEFA Open Day, Autumn Fairs and more

Local News New Post Office for Nyon  On the 12th September 2104 the post office in the centre of Nyon (at Place Bel -Air 5 ) will close its doors for the final time.

The new office will open on Monday 15th September in Rue de la Morâche 9 in Nyon. Opening hours will remain the same. Monday-Friday 09:00-18:00 and Saturday 09:00-12:00. Proposal of increase in local taxes  The municipality of Nyon is proposing a 5 point rise in local taxes beginning 2015 to help finance Le Reposoir, a new primary school which will be situated to the north of the town. The school will accommodate 450 pupils, will have a large gymnasium and a new indoor swimming pool which will be open to the public. Estimated at around 70 million CHF, the school should be finished by 2017.   Nyon’s current local tax rate of 61% is lower than other surrounding towns (Lausanne 79%, Renens 78.5% Morges 68.5% )  For more details of this potential tax hike, see article on the Nyontown site here

Upcoming events The summer season of activities in Nyon is now coming to an end, (the outdoor pool will close on the 7th September), however there are lots of Autumn events on the local calendar to look forward to, from Autumn fairs, to sports, theatre, cultural and music events.

Here are a selection, including the 1st La Côte Women’s Fair in Nyon. There will be experts on hand at this fair to answer questions on education in Switzerland to expat parenting and more. More details below

Saturday 30 August  Vintage Rock Night in Gland featuring Australian band The Stiletto Groove. Time 19.30 at the Dinemec Recording Studios, Rue de la Paix 3, 1196 Gland. Tickets are CHF 20 and all proceeds will benefit  the charity Kids with a Cause Europe . The band have toured with Santana, Bob Marley, Men at Work and many more top flight international performers. This venue has been the chosenrecording facility for Lenny Kravitz, Phil Collins, Jermaine Jackson and other artistsrecording facility for Lenny Kravitz, Phil Collins, Jermaine Jackson and other artists.

On Sunday 14th September it’s “Heritage Day” – Journées du Patrimoine across the canton This year the theme is “A table” and there will be a special day at the Musée du Léman in Nyon on the evolution of fishing on Lake Geneva. The fishermens’ huts in Nyon will be one of the focus points of this special day. See here for details

Also on the 14th September, it’s the new Semi-Marathon of La Côte.  This race will run from Aubonne to Nyon.
